Sixth Grade Social Studies
Social Studies in sixth grade covers many standards. In geography we look at several continents to understand them physically and how humans interact and how push/pull affects movement. We then look at ancient history - the cultures, religions, and how people interact within and with surrounding cultures in the eastern hemisphere. Economics and government are looked at in America and in other countries. As we are doing the various activities, students apply thinking and organizing skills so they can communicate their work in written and oral form.
Welcome to my classroom!
Learning about the past is something I really enjoy. American history - settlement of America up through the Civil War is my real passion. Looking at ancient history can be very interesting and some students enjoy it as well. I try to show video clips or longer so that the visual learners can understand the material better. It is much more difficult to teach concepts when you cannot actually see, touch, or manipulate items within the lessons. I do hope that students will learn enough about the many places throughout the world that some day they will want to vacation or live and work in areas that they once only heard about in a history class.
